Oil leaking from Filter

Ok. Here's what happened. Last fall I decided to change the oil on my 5.7L volvo penta engine. The filter was on so tight, I had to have a pro come in and remove it. I bought the boat used and can't remember who changed the oil. Think it was the dealer but I have not proof. Anyway, after about 5 hours the filter finally came off. I knew that I would have to check for leaks in the spring once I started the engine. Well wouldn't you know, it leaks. In fact, it leaks so bad that I lost all the oil in about 30 sec - 1 min. Thank God the engine never got warm. After a two hour clean-up, I'm begining to wonder (pray) that maybe we put on the wrong filter. That may be wishful thinking. I'm looking for worse case senerio here. What else can be causing the leak and what's the fix?

might not have tightened it enough.. or maybe the gasket from the old filter is still stuck up there.. it happens..

At this point,... All you can do is Take it Off,+ Look.......

Sounds like the ole double gasket trick to me. Like bondo points out, only way to find out is to pull the filter and look (or feel) for a second gasket still stuck to the filter housing or damaged filter (or housing)

I concur, likely hte old filter gasket (or part of it) is still stuck on the block.

Worst case scenario, the oil tube is stripped. Unthread it, replace it and spin on new filter.

Worst worst worst case scenario, the block threads for the filter tube is stripped.
Fix = Try to re-tap the block, or $20 Heli-coil kit, then new filter tube, new filter. Your on your way.

Worst case if you do it yourself should be less than $50 I'd think.
