Oil leaking from Prop area when sitting

I tried searching the forum but none of the post I read were spot on with this and it seems like a pretty obvious one.

When I ran the motor yesterday (with ear muffs in the driveway) before I started it I noticed some lower unit (Clear green) oil on the concrete below the prop and some drips on the lower fin below the prop. After I ran it for about 5 minutes I cleaned up the area and the left a small bowl under it. There was no oil leaking for about 12 hours and then I came home and there was a large amount in the bottom of the bowl (maybe an once) and the oil was leaking from the prop area again.

From what I gathered on this forum it seems there is a seal around the prop that holds in the oil. Any chance this could be come major issue or is it something pretty easy to change?

What year and model motor? Usually when oil leaks out, water comes in. Yes it can cause serious problems. Lower units gears need oil for lubrication. Depending on the motor, it might not be a hard repair.

it sounds like the seals are going, or the filling/draining plug bolts are loose, i would check that you might need to put the motor in water and run it and then drain the grease out of it and it it is leaking, water will come out first you can get more lube at a place like canadian tire, walmart might have it i use canadian tire but then again i live in canada, or you can get the lube from your local johnson dealer

Sorry, it is a 1970ish 75 HP

It has been painted and the only number I have found was on a plug on the rear top of the powerhead (J3671664) I have this in another thread trying to find out the age.

i could tell you if you had a picture, mine a 1952 im pretty good with years if i can see the motor lol
