Hi there, I recently bought a 1986 bayliner 21 foot cuddy cabbin which had a volvo penta 225d engine which was blown....so i replaced it with a chevy 350 every thing seems to run good except i cant get over 4000 rpms....without it backfireing or should i say misfireing....there is oil where the plug wire plugs into the cap and oil in the top of the coil....and this coil is running of a resistor only has about 7.2v is my coil junk??? can i replace the coil with a normal auto 12v coil or will that smoke my points......really would like some advice and help ........please help ...not much time left in my boating season this year... and the guy i got it from said he could run 40 to 45 mph with the 225d im getting 32 with the 350 auto engine....i would think if i could get up in the higher rpms such as 45 to 4800 rpms i could get 40 mph....please help ......thanks in advance

yes the coil sound like its damaged and leaking. depending on your setup, you should have either a balast resistor or an internally resisted coil. If you look, the purple wire on the + side of the coil should run to a resistor mounted right beside the coil. If so, you would need a coil with no built in resistance. You can get either at an auto parts store. I'd bring the old one in with me, just to compare.

I cannot say whether that will get you any more speed or not. A full tune up never hurts.

Maybe, swap out the coil and see what happens. It can only run better, right?

Yes a bad coil would stop you from getting to the higher rpm.s
There is a reason the coil went bad???
Test the voltage into the coil?
If there is a resistor, it should knock the voltage down from 12 to 9v
Too high voltage can burn up the coil.
