Oil Level Indicator light

I just purchased a 1987 40HP Yamaha, short shaft, remote electric start. The oil level lights on the front of the engine do not light at all. It is not connected to any external gauges. Could someone start me in the direction of resolving this problem. Is there any other way to tell the oil level other than pour in until runover?

thest the oil level switch as per the service manual with a multimeter.<br /> could also be its not wired correctly. without seeing it its hard to say.<br /> irf you remove the cover to fill the tank you can see through it and avoid overfills.<br /> biggest worry is will the low oil level alarm work regardless of if the indicators work.
