I have a 4hp Evinrude (I think it's from the 70's) and want to change the oil in the gearcase.
There is a drain plug but I can't see an oil level plug (my 50hp Evinrude has both). Do you fill these smaller engines differently?

Some of the small OMC engines had only one plug for drain and fill.

Post your model number and we can tell.

What JB said. I've got a 99 Mariner 2.5 hp and it has 2 plugs, but I cleaned up a freinds 94? 4 horse Johnson, I think, and it only had lower drain plug, despite that the local dealer said it must have a filler-drain plug and vent plug(top one) They were wrong!! After you drain oil, place motor on its side and refill lower unit, slowly from the drain-plug, It will only take maybe4-5 onces(my guess) P.D.S.

Hi legin...

The 4hp's starting around 73' I think only had one plug in their standard gear case. What ya' have to do is drain the gear case and then lay the engine on it's side with the plug hole up and dribble it in until full. The weedless version of the 4hp has two plugs.
