Howdy, SH.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Your engine is a 1961 long (20") shaft.

Fuel mix, per OMC, is 24:1; 1qt TC-W3 outboard oil per 6 gallons gas or 250ml oil per liter of petrol.

Good luck. :)

There is no tell tale stream from a RD, the water comes out mixed with the exhaust.

I have an RDSL-23 40HP and it calls for 50:1 ratio.

No tell-tale peeing on these unfortunately. The hole in the back is an idle relief to let off exhaust pressure at idle. However, I believe you should always see 'some' water spitting out of the idle relief.

I strictly avoid recommending anything other than the maker's specification.

No pre-1964 OMC product "calls for" a 50:1 mix.

As Paul Moir told you, OMC said 24:1. Go leaner at your own risk.

No offense intended towards anyone here of course, but OMC came out with a bulletin when the 50/1 oil came into existence which (cutting to the bottom line), read somewhat like the following.

Any of OMC's engines which have powerheads consisting totally of needle, roller, and ball bearings pertaining to their main bearings, connecting rod bearings, wrist pin bearings, may use the 50/1 fuel/oil mixture safely.

The 1961 40hp Evinrude/Johnson falls into the above catagory and may use the 50/1 mixture.

However any engine that incorporates a bushing type bearing, whether it is a main bearing, connecting rod, or wrist pin bushing should use its original recommended mixture, stated at the time of manufacture.
