I need to replace my oil monitor hose (1998 Monterey, 4.3L, Alpha one gen 2), which has rotted between the transom and drive. The drive is out, but I was wondering if it is necessary (or will I have a better chance of not breaking off the plastic barb) to remove the bell housing? The Merc manual isn't very clear about what needs come apart for access. If so, what else needs to be removed besides the hinge pins, bellows, exhaust bellows, & shift cable boot?

The hose is pretty hard to get attached with the bell housing off. It might be able to be done with it on, but might be worth a try. The cheap plastic feed thru does break easy.

Just remove the hinge pins and bell housing. No need to go any further unless other things need replacing. Do think about when was the last time bellows was replaced

Thanks. I should have mentioned that I'm replacing the bellows & friends while I'm in there, so it's not much more work to remove the bellhousing. From what you said, I think I'll cut the old hose, and remove the bell housing to get the old hose off. Then put the bellhousing back on and attach the hose. I can't even see the feed through tube from the engine side, so it's probaly worth the extra effort.

Update: I also had to disconnect the water hose to get the bell housing off. I was able to remove the old oil hose without breaking the plastic barb by cutting it longitudinally to loosen. Replacement hose is 10 inches long, 1/4 inch diameter from local autoparts store.
