oil pan change

I'm looking to change my seeping oil pans.I have about 6-8" of clearance below the engines.Does anyone know if this would be enough clearance to drop the pans. I have already removed the upper gear case from the outdrives in preparation to lift the engines if I need to.My other idea would be to coat the pans with a sealer if that can be done. What kind of sealer could i use if I did decide to seal the pans. Thanks

You didn't post details as to what engine, boat, etc (kinda the important stuff) but I would bet there is no way on earth you will clear the oil pickup tube with only 6" or so of clearance.

Re: oil pan change

i have done pans in place a couple times where pulling decks to get motors out is a huge chore. inboards tho, don't know what you have. one trick i use often is to disconnect front mounts, coupling, loosen back mounts and jack the motor way up in the front, pivoting on the tranny mounts..

one was actually Joe Pesci's Chris Craft ;) what a disaster that boat was! sunk by previous owner, bought used by Pesci.. you'd think a guy with that kinda coin would buy new...

but i digress, generally 99.8% of the time it is far faster and you'll get better quality by just yanking it out..

edit/ just reread your post and saw you have an i/o, so scratch the whole motor tipping thing.. i wouldn't recommend any kind of coating. it'll seep and fail again. do it once, do it right. :)

Thanks for the feedback Ryoken and bomar76.I guess I'll wait for the warm weather and dive into the bilge and attack those oil pans.As far as the boat description bomar76,Mon Ami is a 1985 27' Sunrunner with twin 305 Volvo Pentas with the 280 outdrives that I LOVE to keep in tip-top shape. It's a SICNESS

With that info added I don't think there is any way on earth you are gonna get the pan off without pulling the engine.

Re: oil pan change

I would have to go with a big NO on both questions.I hope I am wrong for your sake but I dont think so.There aint enough room to do it correctly and since the pan is seeping already, nothing will seal it.If you are planning on keeping the boat you can spray the new pans with automobile rust proofing before installing them.Dont use undercoating(the black crap).Rustproofing is honey colored and stays a bit tacky forever.Charlie
