I have a 1999 5.7GSPWTR that needs a new oil pan. I ordered an oil pan from another company that sells Basic Powerboat engine parts that was to fit a small block GM in the 1999 era. When I received it, everything looks correct except my old oil pan has what I would call an external dipstick. The dipstick tube goes all the way to the bottom of the oil pan (on the outside) and then connects to a small metal block that is attached to the drain hole of the oil via a banjo bolt. The normal place the dipstick tube connects to the engine has been sealed with a plug. The banjo bolt has what appears to be 1/2-20 threads. The new oil pan has 1/2-13 threads.
The part number for an oem pan is 3857778. It's very expensive. I can cross this oem part number with a pan from the other place that is considerably less expensive.
My questions are:
Is 1/2-20 threads normal for a VP pan while others are 1/2-13?
Why does my existing pan have an external dipstick? Is that normal for a VP?
I don't want to keep buying, and returning, pans only to find out that my existing pan and dipstick has been modified for some reason.
