FYI.....

If anyone has a Mercruiser 454 Mag 7.4 Litre (I believe '97 models and after) the Oil Pan Thread Size is 12mm. I found this out after alot of research.......In case anyone is getting the Stearns Crankcase Oil Drain kit, you will need the extra adapter. The bolt that comes with the kit is NOT the right size!

I've noticed a lot of that lately. Metric threads on US equipment. Is the US changing to metric? And if so, are they doing it slowly? Reminds me of one of those African nations who wanted to change from driving on the right side of the road to the left. So as to avoid confusion they had trucks change on Monday and cars on Tuesday.

Chris.............

hahaha
yep
and now the 10.5mm studs for the grounds are slightly larger than most 3/8 lugs. I am getting good at reaming the lugs. all the bellhousing fasteners are metric on the merc, the volvo 8.1 I replaced last jan still had SAE. the 2 new merc 8.1's I am installing now are all metric.

I work at a manufacturing company and in the last two years we have switched to Metric on all our drawings. The reasoning is that if we have to outsource the manufacture of the parts to foreign companies, they will be able to handle the metric parts, but may have trouble with the English units. Its not too bad, but it takes some getting used to when you try and eyeball a dimension. I can see its 5", but I just don't think 127mm? I imagine someday everything will be metric...don't like it, but seems its inevitable.

CP

If I'm working on a US machine, I expect it to use imperial fasteners. What really annoys me is that I find both Metric and Imperial fasteners on the same machine. I don't mind working in metric, I don't mind working in imperial, I don't like having mixed units on the same block!

If the US manufacturer is using foreign, metric parts, then change the whole damn thing!

Are we up to Tuesday yet?

Chris..............

Pre-war Land Rover? :p The Brits stopped using the larger heads on Whitworth bolts to reduce the amount of metal used to make each bolt during the war (1939-1945), you know, the one you guys only played a minor role in? :D

Chris............

Federal Plansets(US FEDERATION), require both SAE and their metric equivalents on their drawings. The metric will follow in prenthises. They have been doing this at least 12 years now. Technical & building code books as well. I don't mind the millimeters, but when I get into the weights and pressures, I am gone, (in my mind). I guess thats why I can understand Trog, only up to a point.
Achris, over here I think most of us thought we were being taken over by Communists when all of this started happening 50 years ago...sl

Re: Oil Pan Thread Size

The thing that annoys me about the 'standardization' of the metric system is that we have more 'standards' in that system than we ever had in SAE! German metric isn't the same as Japanese metric and of course the French have their own system too.

Chris........
