I have a 94 Volvo Penta 454 engine. It is a stock engine. I'm going to put it in a Hawaiian 21 foot jet boat. The problem is,the oil pan is about 9 inched tall.It hits the floor of the jet boat before I can line up the drive unit. This is a 1994 Generation V engine. Anyone know a place I can get a smaller oil pan? Or even if they make them for the Gen V motors? I looked on E bay. No luck. I also went to the Chevy dealer. No luck. I think these motors are used on the 2500 Chevy trucks. The oil pans are huge. Look like they will hold at least 8 quarts of oil. Generation 4 454s.Have a 7 3/4 inch pans. But the Gen 4 pans are different from Gen 5s. Thank for any help. Mike S. Westville N.J.

welcome to the world of change.
I did a swap similar to yours last year. had to cut off 2" from the sump and reconfigue the oil pump pick up.
only took about 6 extra hours from my dummy boss's bid. customer whined like a dying pig.
but I billed my time anyway. its to easy to get the original engine installation specs and compare them with the new one.
so it may be a custom weld on the pan and a custom oil pump pickup.

Thats what I was thinking of doing. But was afraid it would not be enough oil in the pan removing 2 inches from the stock pan.Customer ever have any problems after cutting it?

nope
with an oil cooler 8 qt capacity is way over kill. just make sure that you modify the pick up to fit the pan.

Great. Do you know how much they might charge to cut and weld the pan?

You should try Summit Racing or Jeg's. They both have a large selection of pans.

It may not be cheap, but it has many advantages.

Mike, a dry sump system basically stores the oil in a remote location such as an easily accessed container. It allows you to mount the engine lower. Many racers use them because it allows increased horsepower for various reasons but there are extra oil pumps and plumbing involved an it's VERY expensive to setup. If you are truly interested, start surfing racing sites.

Aldo

basically a dry sump has no oil pan, just a collector. can be plumbed many ways depending on who made the block.
from having raced with dry sumps trust me, ya dont wanna get involved with it. it looks super cool with all the fittings and tubings and chrome but on a vehicle designed for long term low maint use its a pain. we ran a 427 with a dry sump and a crank mounted oil pump then went to an electric to save another pony or two. many many hours setting up crank scrapers, windage trays, return oil lines and restrictors . before some rule changes we could actually use it as a liquid ballsat for weight transfer :) . cool fuel cans and all the other goodies were standard sometimes I think we spent to much money. other times I know.

Mike1959
Its been at least 10 to 12 years but I will give you an idea for a 4 stage system.
Clean out oil returns in head and drill, tap and plug.
Drill through head for return line to pump.
Drill plug, tap, and plug lifter valley holes.
Drill hole through block, tap with return line to pump.
Drill hole through block for line from cam.
All lines to pump must be SS braided lines.
Line to remote filter,SS braided line.
Line to oil storage tank, SS braided line.
Line back to engine SS braided line.
Block off plate for original oil filter.
Special pulleys must be used for pump, water pump, and alternator.
Wind age tray so oil will go to pick-up outlet to go to pump.
And last special dry sump pan oil pan.

The last pump I bought was $995.00, a spare water pump pulley, machined from billet aluminum, was $185.00. [still got it]
I would guess now the machine works alone would be close to $5,000. and must be done at a specialized machine shop.

Go with Rodbolts suggestion, as you can see it works, and is a little cheaper. :)
Also you can add a long truck filter which will give you another quart of oil.
