oil pressure gauge

I have a 99 bayliner with OMC 3.0 4 cylinder GM engine. Does anyone know where the oil pressure should run. My oil pressure gauge registers about a 20 reading at idle then moves up to about 40 at 2000 rpm and stays there. The gauge goes up to 80. Are the gauges just not that accurate to begin with or do you think I have a pressure problem. The crancase vent is clear, the oil in the pan is full. Thanks Chris

Re: oil pressure gauge

Hi Chris.
The readings sound about right. My 3.0L runs at this pressure and I have had no problems. The gauges are standard throughout the range of engines fitted by the builders. :)

Re: oil pressure gauge

I have the same readings on my 5.0 merc and the book confirms that is where it should be.

Re: oil pressure gauge

thanks for the responses. The boat is new to me and the OMC manual said if the pressure flucuates there could be a proble with the crank case vent, or the oil pump screen not getting covered with enough oil. There are no strange noises at all I just wanted to avoid any if the readings were a problem. Thanks for the advise one and all.
chrispuck

Re: oil pressure gauge

same here, '02 bayliner with 3.0L.
I also verified it with a mechanical guage in place of the oil pressure sending unit.
