I have a thudercraft with two Mercruiser 4.3 LX 1989. Recently i realized that my oil pressure on one engine is running at 20 (more or less) for the first 20 minutes even if at 3400 RPM. My other engine is around 40, 45.

After 20 minutes, the pressure is at 40 but the guage does'nt indicate a stable pressure. It shows from 35 to 45.

The two engines are running well. Do Ihave a problem??

Re: oil pressure problem

try something easy first like switching the wires on the oil pressure guages to see if the problem is in the motor or a guage problem

tommays

Re: oil pressure problem

and then, if the gauges check out, switch the sending units, to check the individual sending unit and the individual engines. All this assuming that all else is identical, i.e. oil, type, level, temp, etc...sl

Re: oil pressure problem

$20 for an oil analysis might be worthwhile if you determine the gauge is reading accurate.

Do you have a problem? if the gauge is reading accurate, it may be signs of an oil pump on its last leg. Or maybe a clogged oil pump screen. If the pressure is low when the motor is cold but increases as the motor gets hotter, that gives me the impression that there's a restriction in oil flow; when the oil's cold it's thicker and not flowing as well through the restriction, thus the low pressure. When it gets hot and thins out, enough oil is able to flow through the restriction and giving better pressure.

Try changine the oil filter first though, with any luck it's just that. What kind of oil filter are you using?
