Had an oil pump failure without a warning signal or beep of any kind, all oil tanks full but nothing making it to the engine. Ran 3 or 4 miles a 3,000 rpm and did not notice any loss of performance or problem of any kind. Is it possible that the power head could make it witout any damage? I understand that Merc uses a plastic gear that pumps oil to the cylinders. Is it possible for a small pieces of destroyed gear to make its way into cylinders ? This sounds like a major design problem. If I check compression on each cylinder and thats ok then go to 50:1 pre mix, can I resume use until I can schedule a complete check by engine tech, or is it possibe that the pump will begin to operate and I will have a 25:1 oil ratio. I think it may be best to have the oil injection system removed and go to all pre mix. What do you think.

If you verify, as Clanton suggests, a problem you can replace the oil injection. Marine Solutions has a 12 volt unit you can use so you dont have to pull the crank to replace the gear. A nice looking piece. They can be reached at 252-524-0804.

Good luck!

My merc has kit on it that removed the oil injection. Plastic gears suck.

Have a 87' Merc 150. Want to remove oil injection. Have taken the pump, plastic gear, and metal shaft out of motor. Does this motor have a brass bushing inside that can fall out or can I simply put a block-off plate. Would appreciate answer from someone who's done this successfully.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went to my local mercury dealer and they had the solution. For those of you wanting to remove your oil injection pump on your mercury it is not hard. Mercury quicksilver actually makes a plastic plug/cover that replaces the oil pump and shaft. They don't advertise this solution b/c they make more money a)selling you a new oil pump or b)selling you a new motor when you fry yours. I can provide the quicksilver part numbers if anyone needs them. The whole "kit" consists of 1 plug, 1 o-ring, and 1 brass plug for a grand total of $12.

besure to get the block off plate that has the long plastic shaft that has the little nob on it.. The nob snaps past the bushing and holds it so it can't fall into the crank... Unless you feel obligated to make your dealer's house note.. order it from Rick Racer for about 1/3 the cost... He'll be sure you get the stuff to do it right...
Part numbers in above post are most likely the right ones....

All the oil injected V6 Mercs use the same part. You can't get the wrong one... I have seen block off plates that didn't have the retainer bar.. don't know if they were Merc Parts or not..

Rick sells alot of stuff to the GO fast guys and most of them remove the oil injection first rattle out of the box...

I know the parts he sells are good and will do the job... don't know if they come from Merc or not...

The P/N's above are the correct parts needed to disable the oil injection unit. If you're ordering, here is what you need.

Qty 1 P/N 43453 - Oil pump block off plug
Qty 1 P/N 25-32509 - O ring
Qty 2 P/N 10-41506 - Screw

I purchased these parts yesterday and started the work on the motor. Once I'm done, I'll post the detailed steps I took to disable the oil injection unit so amateurs like me can follow along step by step.
