Re: Oil pump on Mercury 150
I just spent Big $ replacing my power head due to faulty oil pump system. Do not run your engine. If you want to run it make sure you use a remote gas tank with a 50:1 gas oil mix. Check both resevoirs. If either is low you have to trouble shoot the problem. You will need a manual. It will be the best money you spent on boating. There are many things that can cause the alarm to sound. If it is intermittent then it is an oiling problem.I can give you one test to determine right away if it is a drive system problem in the pump. First, hook up remote tank with mix.Next, disconnect the link rod between the oil injection pump and the carburetor linkage. Next, disconnect the outlet hose of the oil injection pump and see if the injection pump is pumping oil. If the pump is not pumping oil, the drive system to the pump is faulty.Check to see if the oil level in the engine reservoir is full. This test only applies if it is full. If it is not then you may be lucky and it is not an internal problem. I discovered my cause by removing the pump. I discovered plastic pieces on my driven gear. This means that the drive gear is damaged. I also had some compression problems so I replaced the power head. Unfortunaley, After losing the summer season I used the boat 4 times and the new power head blew up. The cause? Faulty installation of the drive gear by Merc. They replaced the head again for free. Good luck.
