I have a 88 model 150 xr2 and I want to remove the oil pump and pre mix my fuel. I don't seem to be able to find step by step instructions to do this. What to plug what wires to disconnect ect.
Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Oil Pump Removal

I have a '86 175 and pulled the pump & resevoir to go to pre-mix. My oil warning module died and it just wasn't worth replacing. First I pulled the pump & shaft that turns it, shaft was tight but I finally pulled it free. Then I made a cover plate out of 1/8" alum and put it over the pump hole with a homemade gasket. Next I removed the oil tank & hoses and ran the gas connect hose right to the carbs. Oil module went next, disconnected it's tan/blu wire from term block leaving the other wire (blk) hooked to the tan/blu in the harness (overheat sender). Violet wire (ign. sw.) gets tied up and not used. Last I got a 3/8" brass pipe plug and put it in the oil tank air pressurizer hose hole. Really cleans up motor. Your '88 should be very similar.
Good luck.

It's a good idea to buy the plastic plug and shaft(one piece) that replaces the oil pump. This plug holds the gear in place inside your motor. If the gear gets free inside your motor it could be a bad deal. Good luck.
CU

------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

CU2, what gear are you talking about? The shaft I pulled had the gear on it and the only other gear is the plastic one on the crank which is fastened firm to it.

Re: Oil Pump Removal

Consider this as an option. I also plan to disable the oil injector on my 200 EFI. I've heard all the stories about gears coming lose etc. Also, if you sell the boat with it removed, it may impact the value (some people insist on having it). Here's what I am doing to mine.

Leave the pump in place!! Disconnect and cap off the input line from the main reservoir which feeds the small oil tank on the engine. Remove the oil injector output line, put a longer hose on it and connect/adapt it to the top of the reserve tank on the engine (where the feed line from the main reservoir was removed). Also cap off the pressure supply line going to the main reservoir. Keep the reserve tank about half full of oil. During operation, the oil from the injector pump is simply recycled in and out of the reserve tank to keep the pump oiled (you don't want to run the inj pump witout oil). Now, plug the open fitting where the injector pump output hose was previously connected to the fuel system (if you don't, your gas mileage will go WAY down!). Now, you can pre-mix your gas 50:1. In this manner, all the components will remain in place for reconnecting, and, you run no risk of gears or shafts coming loose in the engine. And, you don't have to disable your warning system (unless you have a problem with it). Best thing is that you won't have to worry about your injection failing and either blowing your motor, or stranding you 20 miles from anywhere.

That's the gear, it needs to be held in place with the plastic shaft and cap(one piece)that is used to replace the oil pump and metal shaft. I have no faith in the mid 80's oil injection systems. I have two 85 150 mercs and it failed on both. One was blown and I saved the other. Good luck.
CU

---------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!
