As I understand it, 5W30 is made from a base oil of 5 weight, then thickeners are added to make it "act" like a 30 when hot.
I have been told that when the oil gets near the end of it's life cycle, the thickeners aren't as effective as they were when the oil was new.
Whereas, if you put SAE30 in, 300 hours later, it's still SAE30 (+ dirt, + wear materials + combustion byproducts + moisture etc., but you don't have to worry about the VI improver additives breaking down)
Scott's chart shows 15W40 very close to 40 in viscosity (slightly closer than mine does), and 10W30 only somewhat thinner than 30, but for new oil. (I would assume)
If changed frequently enough, it seems multigrades would be fine.
In the end, there's a lot of analysis going on so you can grab one jug off the shelf instead of the one next to it on the shelf.
Can always just get what is recommended..
