Oil running down side of foot???

I have a 1983 115 Hp Johnson. About a year ago I noticed oil started to run down the side of the foot just underneath the powerhead. I have been wiping it off with paper towels and a little 409. About 3 outings later it will be back. nothing profuse, just enough to make an oil stain that gathers dust on it and creates an oil slick if not wiped off. There has been no loss of power or performance that I can tell.

Can someone tell me the cause? I am guessing a seal of some sort and I don't think I want to take off the powerhead myself.

Any idea what a reputable shop would cause to fix it?

Thanks,
Sm

Howdy Swampmouse

Most likely just unburned oil...Nothing to worry about...

Does that mean maybe I am mixing a little too rich? I am mixing 8 oz. oil for 3 gallons of gas.

Sorry - Obviously I am not watching what I say close enough! Yes, I am using 8 oz per gallon.

If it is just unburnt oil, anything I can do to prevent it? I do see a bunch of residue inside the motor cover. Maybe running out of the carb when the motor is up for transit and storage?

Now that I look like a total bafoon! Sorry for the annoying and inconsistent post.

For the final record......8 oz. oil and 3 gallons of gas. I promise to quit watching tv while posting.

Thanks for your patience!!!

Re: Oil running down side of foot???

That is the correct oil mix. 50:1, 1 pint to 6 gallons, 1/2 pint to 3. You probably have a minor fuel leak somewhere if it's clean ooze. If it's dirty black, maybe a minor gasket leak. Squirt it real good with that 409 or some auto engine degreaser and hose it off to start out clean and then see if you can locate it.

FR - It's black. I will try to clean it and take a look.

Thanks for the info!

If the oil is black then it is probably the power head to adapter gasket that is leaking. The black oil is from the Exhaust.
Try re-torquing the powerhead securing bolts. Take care that you dont shear any bolts. You could just live with it if you want.
