Interesting question, mineral oil has been underground for millions of years, so you'd expect it to have quite a long shelf life once bottled wouldn't you? I wonder how that applies to synthetic though?

Oil is about the only thing you can buy anymore with a longer shelf-life than a Twinkie. ;)

Re: OIL SHELF LIFE???

I bought a 55 gal drum of EXXON TCW years ago, it took me like 3 years to use it up and the only problem I had was that it started to jell up so I had to make sure I shook it real good. After that experience I went back to just buying gallons. It is much cheaper (50%) by the barrell. That is why the dealers can sell it in the bulk for a couple dollars less and still make a decent profit margin.

Is it really true that there is stuff in TCW3 oil that will settle out and that it should be shaken? What does that stuff look like? What is it? How long does it take to settle out?

I've just never seen it, but then again I haven't even thought of it, haven't looked for it (or noticed it) and have never shaken oil containers.

The oil will last longer than the shelf.

gss036,
Shaking a 55 gal. drum of oil equates to the events in World's Strongest Man contest. Quite an accomplishment.

My Dad (worlds origional cheapskate) bought a case of outboard oil from a Dollar store. When he opened it, the stuff had the consistency of motor honey, no amount a shaking/stirring made a difference.

TCW is the first in the series. Then came TCW-2. Then they added a bit more anti-carboning agents and now it's TCW-3. The TCW should work fine. Before TCW there was BIA Certified. BIA went away and that's when TCW came out. Might just be a different name for the same stuff.

Dollar Store outboard oil? I've seen some incredible deals at Dollar Stores, but I don't think I'd trust that one.

Hey!....this brings up an interesting thought....a friend of mine has been mixing shell 10w30 regular old motor oil in with his gas at a 50/1 ratio for decades....refuses to believe that we need tcw3 or any special two stroke oil at all....I know his engines have lasted and lasted....he even bought a new(er) Johnson 15 hp that he runs the same stuff in....is he crazy?...is he ruining his motors/ .... or is he just smarter than the rest of us!? :>

Tim

Some engines run Merc premium TCW-3 The larger ones should have Premiums PLUS TCW-3. Is it worth saving 2 bucks? I'd have to think about that one... no i wouldn't!

Unless he's using the absolutely cheapest 10w30 and is saving 75 cents a quart. He's probably not crazy, but seems kind of stupid, penny wise and pound foolish.

Tim
