I have been having starting and running issues with my 1989 3.7l mercruiser. Recently when I start it, it will run (perfectly I think) for a few seconds then stall. The other day it took a long time to start then it backfired and stalled. When I take the cap off the valve cover it smells like fuel. Could this be caused by the fuel pump?? a bad diaphram??

Fuel pump needs replaced. Leaking in to the crankcase past the lever.

Is it possible for that to happen without seeing any gas in the upper part of the pump? I took the pump apart and the top was bone dry...do you think that's the backfire issue too? Thanks!!!

Has the oil level risen any? When you replace the pump, make sure you change the oil too...

It doesn't look like the oil has risen, but definitely smells. I guess replacing the pump is my first step ...
