Oil warning beeper constant

When I fired my 1988 150hp XR4 up Saturday morning, the oil warning beeper began to beep steadily despite the fact that my exhaust had plenty of smoke in it indicative of oil in the mixture. I chanced making a short run keeping an eye on the engine temperature guage. The engine temp never got above what it ususally does and I made the run there and back with no apparent problems. I know that he oil warning measures two things: the level of oil in the tank mounted on the engine and the rotation of the oil pump. Since the oil lever appeared to be ok, when I got home I removed the hose going from the oil injection pump to the fuel pump and started the engine thinking that oil should come out. None did and, since the oil pump appears to be calibrated to the throttle position, I am not sure if I was running the engine fast enough or not. I have had several oil pump warning modules replaced in the past since I bought the motor new.
My questions are: 1. Is there a way to check the module since they are quite expensive and I would not want to replace one that did not need replacing? 2. Should oil come out of the hose I disconnected? 3. Would I be money ahead to just remove all the oil injection components and mix the oil into the fuel myself?
I know that the wisdom to help me make the right decision is out there just waiting for my question. Thanks in advance.
