Well, I am not going to say "that was easy" until I hear my motor run.

But it was certainly faster than expected. Got a lot of sediment out of the carbs, no large chunks of shellac. Only had that in the bowls. First one took me 30 minutes, second one took me 10 minutes, third one even faster.

I noticed that the low speed screws were all different. From top to bottom, they were set at 1 1/2 T, 7/8 T, 1 T. I am a little confused by the large variance. Anything odd about this?

I also cleaned out the cowling while the carbs were out and found the below grommet looking thing. Sort of looks like a plug. Any idea what it might be?

Those are rubber plugs to close the three holes in the front of the airbox. The holes are there so you can reach through with a screwdriver to adjust carbs with the low speed needles in the front. SOME carbs have the needles on an angle on the side and, of course, you can leave the plugs in the airbox to adjust them-- if this airbox has holes. These rubber plugs are not critical and you can leave them out. The airbox serves ONLY togather and contain "spit-back" fuel from the carbs. This is then recycled into the manifold by the black hose at the bottom of the airbox.

ALL carbs are adjusted to an average of the three. So all three of yours should have been adjusted to 1 1/8 turns. However, since you have no idea who did the adjusting or if it is correct, (It is not as I have explained) adjust from scratch at 1 1/4 turns out to start on all three. Then follow the instructions in the FAQs sticky Synchronizing timing and carbs.

Thanks Frank (again). Thank your lucky stars I am not a neighbor. I'd be stalking you. Hell, I may just move to your neighborhood anyway.

OK... carb timing coming up next. This seems to be the project that just won't finish :)

The factory guys say, carb settings for the 85.
When you set them up they say out 1 turn and leave it there.
I've had my motors set up that way since 1990 when they sent out the service bulletin.
Never had a problem.
Too many people were trying to adjust them with out isolating the carb.
There is an equalizing tube that needs to be closed. So they said(after much testing) 1 turn out.
