I removed my carb for a rebuid and figured I would change the oil in the engine. Smell of gas in oil. What is causing this? 1998 5.0 with an electric fuel pump. Fuel pump was just changed. old one was electric too. Changed old one due to low pressure. Thanks in advance guys and girls

If your carb bowls were draining into the intake manifold (with the engine off) the gas would find its way into the cylinders through open valves pass the rings and end up in the crank case. Depending on how many times this occurred you could end up with a strong gas smell in the oil. Thats my theory any way.

another question what oil should I be putting in it. I know I should have changed oil before this when I first installed engine. But oil was just put in by the guy I bought engine from.

We had this issue in our circle track car. Carb was dumping fuel (read: Pig Rich) and when the car would sit, the gas would eat away at the rings and slowly, but surely work its way into the crank case.

I would see if you can run a compression check. Ours needed new rings.
