Having problems with my 85 merc, motor will idle only with fast idle engaged (barely idles normally after running for a good 20 minutes). On the water the boat pulls back quickly then releases like its missing and this occurs throughout entire RPM cycle up to WOT, problem does not get any better after letting it run for awhile. I am down to jamming the fast idle down and at the same time throwing it into gear just to get her going. The guy I bought the boat from says its most likely the stator and told me how to check with an OHM meter, he said he believes the trigger was recently replaced and has pretty much ruled out a fuel starvation problem. Now, if you couldnt already tell I know very little about outboards and inclined just to take this into a shop but down here in Biloxi marine mechanics are hard to find after the storm, and I have read horror stories about outboard repair bills. My question is: is there a quick and simple way for me to really diagnose and isolate this (yeah right!), and does anyone know a good reputable Merc mechanic on the gulf coast of MS or even over in Mobile?
makoshark - Biloxi, MS

Welcome to iboats. :)

First thing I'd do is pull the sparkplugs and see how they're burning. They should all look about the same. One or a few that look way different than the others usually indicates a problem, and which cylinder(s) the problem is with. Depending on which are different, we can narrow-down the possibilities for you.

Just one different sparkplug burn would eliminate the carb as a possibility. Each carb feeds two cylinders, so two neighboring sparkplugs would be affected. If you have two odd ones but they're not neighbors, it could be a switchbox problem. There are two and they fire in pairs. But the pairs they fire aren't usually cylinder neighbors. There are other possibilities, but that's a start.

A good way to check for spark while running is to connect an inductive pick-up timing light and tape the trigger on. Place the light somewhere you can see the flash and have a run. If it misfires, you'll see it. If it comes and goes, you'll see it. But only if the problem is spark-related. Check each of 6 cylinders in successive runs. If the flash is good on all and the motor is still misbehaving, then I'd start looking at the carb(s). If they all start misfiring over 3/4 throttle or so, then I'd be looking at that stator.

Pulled all the plugs, they all looked identical, a little wet with fuel/oil but aside from that each plug was consistent and I didnt see any burns. Should also mention that the power packs are both new.

Go through Clams' Link and Sync post. Couldn't hurt, and it does include instructions on setting the idling.

If you can't get it to work inside those specs, you have a problem. Idle jets in the carbs blocked or something similar

Re: OK..here goes '85 Merc inline 6

OK, I ran seperate coil, trigger, and stator tests with a multimeter. All my readings for everything were within range except for one of my stator readings. The acceptable stator resistance range on the low side is 5800-7000, and while my blue/white wire to ground tested at 6430 ohms, my blue to ground wire tested at 4180 ohms, 1620 ohms below the low range. Now, I am a computer engineer not a mechanic, is 1620 ohms off of the low end a significant enough amount to cause a motor to miss? Does it look like I need to replace the stator? Thanks!

Don't know what the term "stator" means. I take it to mean the stators of the alternator around the flywheel. If you are talking about something in the ignition system I don't know what it is.

I don't know what engine you are talking about. I had an '89 115 tower of power. It had solid state ignition and I don't remember how many pulse packs or coils it had but it was all electronic and each cylinder had it's own pulser.

A low resistance reading in an electronic circuit, which the trigger and firing circuits would be (pulser), could indicate a short circuit internally and hence not operating properly.

If you could get a pair of water ear muffs and get on a water hose at home you could run this test.
Stick a short piece of wire under the sparkplug boot of all cylinders with a quarter inch sticking out. Crank her up and using a suitable jumper wire to the engine block (ground), arc to the wires, one at a time and see if all are there and the same intensity. Like you get the same distance from each and the arc is blue and stout with a nice crisp smacking noise. If any are weak or absent you have your problem.

The alternator (stator) has nothing to do with this if your battery is up.

Glad you are recovering from Katrina. We had 3 families from there for 10 days.....all I could take but we were able to help them get on their feet and make a go of it. They went back to go to work on the cleanup as they were out of work.

I saw pictures of the boats at the yacht harbor at Pass Christian and boy what a mess.

Mark

Sorry to have bumped my post so much, I told you I was a computer engineer so I am better at flooding forums than I am working outboards! Thanks for all of your replies, I have spent hours just reading this forum and I have to tell you this has to be one of the the most successful problem/solution forums I have navigated, alot of newbs like myself have been helped.
As far as katrina recovery goes, I am frustrated with all the New Orleans coverage and lack of Southern Miss coverage, even though we got the brunt. Coastal Biloxi for all intents and purposes is gone, and things pretty much wiped a good ways in too. Its a tough place to raise young ones now, but we will manage, im a transplant from Pittsburgh but its the same breed of folk here, no give up in them. Thanks for the concern.

makoshark
