My 1995 yamaha 130 2 stroke was running fine. When coming back from the fishing grounds we were running around 4000 rpm and all of a sudden the engine dies......no power stopped in its tracks. It starts up fine and will run at lower rpm but if I accellerated to above 2500 rpm it dies flat.
No alarm, nothing.
When I got back to the dock I took off the cover and discovered that the oil reservoir was bone dry! I had just filled the remote reservoir so I knew that i had lots of oil. I discovered that the small oil filter that sits in between the remote tank and the engine was plugged. This caused the reservoir in the engine compartment to run dry and the engine to stall.
I pulled the plugs and found 3 to be somewhat oil fouled and one with a nice brown dry look. replaced them and went for a ride. The engine ran like crap for a while and then started to run fine and now seems to be ok. perhaps a tad noisier however.
Here is the question: did I damage the engine or how can I find out if I have? compression check?
I am pissed that the alarm did not go off, the magnetic slider must have been stuck. If the reservoir runs dry, does the engine have some kind of safety system to shut it down? if so, why would it let me run at slow speeds if i was out of oil?
Thanks
Andy
