I just had a seal kit put on as well as the water pump redone. Taking the LU off wasn't that bad, I'm just wondering what I need to watch for as I put it back on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

1969 Mercury 800

make sure shifter and LU are in forward gear.
have someone move the flywheel back and forth
while putting on the final few inches helps the
splines line up. make sure water tube lines up
and use a good spline grease so it comes apart
easy next time.
have fun,
M.Y.

This may be stupid, but how do I tell that the LU is engaged in the forward gear before I put it back on? Thanks for all the help.

Kozman -

With the lower unit off, try spinning the prop. When it is in forward, it will only go one way and it will make a click sound.

- Brian

Thank you gentlemen. I dismantled the unit while it was in neutral. Thanks again!

I disagree with Thomas. Merc L/Us default to forward gear. That is they are always in forward unless held in another position. If you disassembled the unit with the lever in neutral, when you disconnected the l/u, it automaticly shifted to forward. Since there is no way to hold the l/u in neutral during reassembly your going to have fits. Shift the lever to forward, shift the l/u to forward and reassemble. The reason behind this defalt idea is so you can still move your boat in the event you break a cable, etc.
