Just taking the boat out to the local lake today, two of my ProPulse blades cracked in half! I have no idea how it happened, as nothing was even in the lake to cause it. The boat just started vibrating some and while swimming around I saw what was wrong.

So. I need a SS prop. Three aluminums (plus rebuild) and 4 ProPulse blades is enough. My boat seems to run best with a 20 pitch, 4 blade...so what SS should I be running? 3 or 4 blade?

It's a 302 Volvo SX, 190 hp.

The best scenario is to get hooked up with a performance center and arrange for a test session. At that time you can try each. There are 4 blade props specificaly designed for a stern drive.

Be prepared to record everything including top (accurate) speed. A GPS is preferred.

I really think youll be happiest with the proper 4 blade.

Good luck!

Funny I was just reading about how bad those ProPulse props are. Total junk!

ProPulse Reviews

What happened to your aluminums?

You know if you hit someting with SS you risk damaging your lower unit becuase the SS don;t give or break.

Find a SS 4-blade of the same size and pitch if you liked the aluminum one---SS will enhance your top end performance a few MPH. You can go up an inch in pitch if you pick a three blade prop and get about the same performance, maybe a few more MPH at the top end because three blades are more efficient at high rpms.

One word of caution about SS props----make sure you have people who know what they are doing loading and unloading your boat off the trailer on various boat ramps you use. In my experience, this is the place where you can really hurt your boat and drive---concrete does expensive damage to stainless steel and can bend your drive shaft.

Most of the smaller sticks, etc. that you run over in the water won't hurt SS props---if you boat in shallow, rocky lakes--stay with aluminum.

I run in pretty crappy waters (IL river) and I've yet to have to rebuild a stainless prop since I started running one on my old boat in 1990 (knock on wood).

Use emery cloth or sand paper (don't use a metal file) to touch up the edges of your SS prop at the end of the season and you're good to go.

Me 2... I just put on a Propulse prop last week (wanted to test different pitches) Anyway Saturday afternoon while in the middle of a slow turn my RPM shot up and the alarm went off. Shut down the engine and took a look... All 4 blades had broken off, I didn't feel a thing and couldn't see any debris in the water. Fortunately I had my original Mirage plus still on board and managed to do a mid-water change. Suffice it to say I am not impressed with Propulse and I am sticking with SS from now on.
