I choked it down till it cut off after opening the cowl (well friend did at the controls) so you could hear the noise in an rpm range. its like a constant dull whirring noise that can be heard over the normal engine noise. Is this a needle bearing going bad in the engine itself?? its not in the foot. I already tore it apart and showed pics here:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=489787

Is this what starved engine bearings sound like as in, if the oil injection system stopped functioning? if so, how do I test the oil injection system or should I just rip it all off and start adding oil to my gas? if so, what ratio should I add and should I add more now to help with the (most likely) increased clearance in the bearings??

also on a scale of 1-10 how bad is the noise?

I watched the vid and to be honest my non-expert ear couldn't hear the whir. Sounded exactly like my buddies Merc 80 of the same vintage.

Check your plugs...are they oily or dry?.Do you have an active oil warning system? If your not sure run 50/1 in your tank to be safe.Another way is to mark your oil reservoir level and petrol, then go for an hour run(using 50/1 mix of course) and see if oil level has dropped.

You could also run motor on 50/1 mix, undo link between carb and oil pump, then disconnect outlet hose of oil pump and see if pumping oil while motor running....if not, your drive system is shot.Good luck.

how active will the pump be if working good? will oil just be spurting out of the outlet hose or trickling?

I've noticed the past couple of times I've run the engine I havent really seen much smoke from the exhaust which is causing me to focus on this.

I think I will go ahead and fill the tank with appropriate ratio of oil and then drain the prime bulb and carbs and repump to get oil mix into the engine sooner than later.

...it sounds a little like metal on metal. Check near the flywheel and see if anything is rubbing against the cover....and I hope it's not something in the LU. Good luck.

Should only be drip drip at idle.At idle you would use 100 ml of fuel to 1 ml of oil,so you can imagine it won't be gushing out.
Have you checked your plugs yet. They will tell you a few stories.

not yet. I already have new plugs and meant to put them on last night after I put the foot back on to crank it up but daylight was fading on me so I decided to wait.

it sounds a little like metal on metal.

exactly. but more like a grinding type whirring. I should probably note that this engine had to be broken free with a breaker bar twice. first time was after the boat sank. it was down for 15 minutes in salt water and 3 hours later we were getting it cleaned up and cleaned out to run and had to break it free real quick. it was not making the noise at this point.

then after running it a couple times and taking it back out on the water again, I let it sit for 2 years before cranking it again. had to break it free again and cranked it up and it ran fine. been running fine ever since but it was shortly after this it started making the noise. I'm leaning more and more to it being the crank roller bearings which could be getting compounded by the oil injection if that is going bad as well.

and yeah, it truely did slip my mind for a little while lol. I really dont want to have to crack the case. I just want to use the engine for the summer and then tear it down. ugh.

Sunk in salt water and it's gotta be the oil pump. Go figure.

My computer speakers at home are apparently pretty cruddy. Listening through headphones I can hear the grinding. Again, I'm no expert but if the motor was submerged in salt water and then developed a grinding noise I'd be worried you risk serious damage running it until you know exactly what the cause is. You could have contaminated the main bearings, needle bearings in the connecting rods, something like that.

...at the very least, you can always give it that in-depth Seafoam treatment.....search older posts for that technique.

the engine has had 25-30 hours on it running flat out since the sinking occured a couple years ago. its been cleaned out long ago.

I've heard bad bearings before in cars and this doesnt really sound like that. I'm going to run it rich on oil mix for a little and see where that gets me. I just want it to last until november and then I'm going to tear it apart and see whats been going on. I think it'll last as long as I run it nice and fat rich with oil.
