Hello everone Oklahoma has passed a new boating law
effective Jan 1 2007. It states that no one under 12 can operate a water vessel and ages 12-- must take a test and carry the card with them and they must have a adult age 18 or older within 500 feet or yards ( I can't remember which) in view watching them.
within 5 years it will require all persons to pass a saftey class to boat.
just wanted everyone to know

Stupid law....
The safety class is a good idea, however......JK

I like the rule....same as it is here. Can't operate before 12, at that time the kid needs to get a certificate to operate alone. Then once you get you drivers liscense you can drie the boat wheneer. I wish we required a safety coarse, as long as it is feasable to take and administer. I wouldn't want some 10 year old operating a motorboat near me. The adults can barely handle that responsibility.

Must be 16 here

Maryland - Age Restrictions and Education Requirement:
Persons less than 16 years of age shall not operate a Personal Watercraft on waters within the State of Maryland.

All boaters born on or after July 1, 1972 must complete an approved safe boating course and have in their possession proof of such completion while operating a numbered or documented vessel on Maryland waters.

Down here in Ga you can't operate under 12. 12 - 13 can operate under 30 hp under direct adullt supervision OR if they have past the boaters safety course. 14 - 15 can operate anything under supervision OR BSC. 16 and over can operate anything w/ or w/o BSC. I think they should make the BSC mandatory for ANY boater no matter the age.

Being basically Libertarian I usually object to laws restricting behavior of adults.

When behavior puts other people in peril, however, I agree with requiring certification that protects others from incompetent operation of vehicles of any type.

Minors, I think, should be restricted or even forbidden to take on responsibility for the safety of others until they are legally accountable for the consequences of their behavior.

Good catch Alden. I wasn't aware there was any boating going on in Oklahoma either. Watched too many westerns growing up I guess.

Serenity,
He may have meant FRESHWATER shoreline.
Cause OK is definitely not the state with the most shoreline.
That would be AK!!!!
