I was asked today to look at an old johnson from the 60's with electric shift. I told the guy the only problem was the electric shift. Can you remove that lower unit and swap it out with a lower unit from the eighties modern lower with a shift rod?

seriously doubt it. you would have to have shift linkage, etc, fabricate mounts. etc. the cost of parts if you can find them is preventative. best thing is to part it out.

No. the only lower units that will bolt on are from pre 1969. The smaller case from the electric shift 75, 80, 85 and 90hp models will bolt on too. The mechanical shift versions of the 1960 thru 1968 gearcases have the same bolt pattern but the 100 hp has no provision for the shift linkage on the midsection and cowl.

the 1966 - 1968 100hp gearcase shared many parts and housing with the pre cobra OMC stern drive.
