I have acquired an old Johnson 35 hp and I can't find ant ID plate or numbers. I think it is a 1957 based on the SELOC repair manual (which only goes to 1958) and shows a generator. this motor has no generator or a place to mount one, It has a starter and electric choke. I have searched the entire motor for a tag or some other kind of number or code but no joy. The color is sort of a maroon. Any ideas?

hnewton, post some pictures and we can help figure out what year it is. There are some folks on here that can literally look at it and tell you. Not sure with your engine, but some engines have a disk on the top of the engine that looks like a welch plug and there are numbers on it. That can help identify the engine. JMHO!

Maroon would make it a 57 or 58.-----The generator was an option and quite rare back then.-----Look above the transom clamps for identification on it.

Or, could be a 1956 30hp. They were maroon also. In any event there would not be a "place" for a generator because the generator bracket was part of the kit. AND, the generator was not an option on the 30hp. Does your motor have compression relief valves on the cylinder head? 35hp motors have them, 30hp motors do not.

yup. and...might not want that generator anyway. Believe I recently read that the holiday bronze for the '57 was different than the '56, but not sure (if you get to painting).

There were different colors called holiday Bronze. They're all faded by now. But the correct color for your year is available, if it matters.

I am trying to send pictures now....................but unfortunately I am a computer dumba%& so it may be a while. The cylinder heads have compression relief valves.
The cowl is a clamshell type, white over blue. It has Johnson on the sides and "35" on the end. The power head is maroon. The carb has an electric choke and bowl-type fuel filter (if that helps). Can't find a fuel pump but there is something on the side with two fuel lines coming off of it?
Still no luck locating any numbers or codes as suggested by racerone and gm 280. I will continue to try and send pictures. Thanks.

I sent the pictures......................................they are somewhere in cyber space. At the sake of sounding completely ignorant, can someone help me get these from my computer to this posting? Geez, who knows where they are at.

The valves mean it is a 1957 or 1958 35hp. There is very little difference between the two. It requires a pressure tank. Air is pumped into the tank via one of those hoses, which pressurizes the tank, forcing fuel to the motor through the other hose. It sounds like you have a mixture of Johnson and Evinrude motors. Evinrude Blue and Johnson Red/maroon/bronze, whatever you want to call it. Evinrude hoods flip open from the side, Johnson hoods flip open from the rear. They are interchangeable, along with the hood mounts. Posting pictures should be simple. Click on the camera icon, then upload them from your computer. They should appear immediately.

What do you want it to be? Call it a 1957 or call it a 1958. There are so many parts swaps and different colors it really doesn't matter. But it is a 35hp, for sure. Do I see a metal band around the bottom of the starter? If so, that is a 1956 starter (6V)

I went out and checked and there is no band, it is a 12v starter. Thanks for your help. I read on another post about putting a fuel pump on this. Is there a preferable/compatible type/brand I can us? I am going to try and get this thing running, if so, I will change it over.

I usually use Mikuni pumps, available from Amazon and elsewhere and very reasonable. You will need one with three nipples, one inlet, one outlet and one for the pulse from the motor.See top secret files above for howtos

It is most likely all, or mostly a 1957 Johnson 35hp. The cowl script gives that away.
