I ahve an older (probably early 70's) model 7.5 HP mercury that my Uncle gave me years ago and I have never tried to run it. I carried it to a mercury dealer recently to get it running, tuned up and serviced and they laughed and said they couldnt do anythig with it!!!! Is it possible to get parts of these older models are am I wasting my time?

Re: Old 7.5HP

I have a 1970 Merc 7.5 hp. I'd call another dealer or independent outboard repair service. Here are some good links to put in your favorites under Mercury:

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/topics/008757.html

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/select_docs3a.asp?doc_nbr=+13716+++

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/mercury_outboards_by_year/?year#nbsp_before_1984

http://www.oldmercs.com/index.htm

http://www.oldmercs.com/197073Merc75.htm

http://www.vintageoutboard.com/default.html

You'll find that you can find many but not all parts. This is based on my experience with my early 70s 9.8 (very similar to your 7.5, I'd bet).

Assuming the compression's good, the most likely problem areas are fuel system and spark.

Fuel system is all just cleaning and/or replacing fuel lines, etc from the tank pick up to the carb. At the carb, you'll find it pretty easy and cheap to find fuel pump rebuild kits and carb gasket kits. Cleaning the carb is straight forward (many posts here). The full-on carb rebuild kit is also probably available, but expensive (>$50).

Spark issues are also pretty easy to find parts for and to cure: plugs are available of course. Plug and coil wires are easy to replace. The coils (2) are available, but kind of expensive ($30+ each), but easy to test (at the plug with a spark tester w/adjustable gap). The switchbox is also available, but very expensive unless you find a proven used one. Upstream from that, at the flywheel, I have no idea since I haven't had to go that far! (yet)

Water pump impellers are readily available.

Props are readily available and not too expensive.

Some of the old mercs have water issues in the lower units that are hard to fully cure. The drive shafts are steel that can get rough from corrosion and not hold a seal well. Sometimes you can find a used drive shaft, but sometimes you just have to use a redi-sleeve or live with a little water.
Good luck.

Re: Old 7.5HP

Hi Hunt!

You know...that's not really that old.

Was it abused or damaged in some way? What makes you think that it needs much in the way of parts and service?

There are many many engines a lot older than yours that continue to render faithful service...year after year.

Go read JB's sticky post about awakening a sleeping outboard
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000033;p=1#000000

The reason that your Mercury dealer blew you off is because they feel that the engine isn't worth (in $$$) the amount of labor charges that would be required to do an overhaul on it.

You're going to have to work on it yourself...or find someone near you who will help you out.

There are a lot of people on boards like this who would stop by and help you sort things out. Too bad I don't live closer to Georgia; or I'd volunteer.

Good luck, Chuck
