I'm trying to find out a few things about my motor. It is a 75 HP Johnson outboard MDL#V4SL-14B Ser# 2197727. I would like to find out what year it is, what prop to buy for it, what is available for tune up and impeller also need seals for lower unit. I guess this would be easy to find out if I knew what year the motor was. If it helps as far as prop selection the motor is going on a 18 ft glasspar seacruiser. I'm looking for best possible performance. Anything you could tell me would be a great help. Thank you.

D. Smith

D.SMITH,I DO NOT HAVE MY BOOKS WITH ME SO I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THE YEAR MODEL.BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN STILL GET JUST ABOUT ANY PART YOU MAY NEED FOR IT FROM YOUR LOCAL JOHNSON DEALER.I HAVE RECENTLY REBUIT A 1958 EVINRUDE 50 H.P. FOR ONE OF MY CUSTOMERS WITH NEW CRANK,RODS,PISTONS,BEARINGS,SEALS,WATER PUMP,POINTS,ETC.HAD NO TROUBLE LOCATING ANYTHING EXCEPT SOME OF THE HARD PARTS .BUT EVEN THEY WERE NOT HARD TO FIND. FUNNY THING IS THE CUSTOMER HAS BEEN A REGULAR FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW AND USES HIS BOAT REGULARLY AND THIS WAS THE FIRST MAJOR PROBLEM HE HAS EVER HAD . HE TOLD ME HE BOUGHT THE BOAT AND MOTOR NEW IN 1958 FOR $1,800.OO AND IT COST HIM ALMOST A $1000.00 MORE THAN WHAT HE PAYED FOR THE RIG TO PUT IT BACK IN LIKE NEW CONDITION , BUT HE FIGURED THE ORIGINAL WENT FOR A LITTLE OVER 40 YEARS AND THAT IF HE COULD GET HALF THAT OUT OF IT NOW THEN HE WOULD BE TO OLD TO USE IT ANYWAY . HOW ABOUT THAT AN OUTBOARD BUILT TO OUTLAST IT'S OWNER . WHO CAN SHOW ME A JAP MOTOR THAT THEY CAN SAY THAT ABOUT ......YEA THAT IS WHAT I EXPECTED NOTHING BUT SILENCE . I KNOW THIS IS NOT THE SAME MOTOR AS YOUR 75 H.P.BUT THERE IS VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE IN THE MOTORS .YOU HAVE A GREAT MOTOR THERE IT WILL DRINK GAS AS FAST AS YOU POUR IT IN ,BUT YOU WILL RUN OUT OF GAS BEFORE IT WILL. GOOD LUCK

Hi d. smith
Your motor is a 1962 model. As the Capt says parts shouldn't be a problem. I am over hauling a 1963 75hp Evinrude right now.

Re: Old 75 hp Johnson

What now I fired it up. the water pump did'nt appear to work so I shut it right off. Is there any thing I should replace other than the the water pump or "if it's not broke don't fix it?" The motor sat for at least five years. Also wondering what prop would work best I have a brass prop that was on it but it looks like some one ran it a few miles out of the water on a rocky beach. I'm hopeing some one knows the motor snd what it needs to get the overall performance. any info would be great! Thank you D.smith
