Hi Guys
New to your forum.
Pardon my ignorance if this has been discussed before.
i recently received an old 9.9 Mercury in a box. needless to say I had to have it reassemled. I took it to a local tech school for this. ( A friend of mine) The engine had been reassembled with various missing parts replaced, but never run. To my amazement it started quite easily. My question is this. How much water should I see spraying out from the small tell tale indicator on the back of the case? I know the impellor was replaced. It seems only to sputter out? Is this enough? I have a 90 HP on another boat that produces a strong steady stream. I don't know what I should expect to see from a 9.9? Could the students have missed or not fully inserted the feed tube?
Thanks in advance for your help

Commander
I'm sorry the label is gone?
The shop teacher told me he thought it was
about a 1973?
It's a Mercury 9.8 110 Blue labels, black body.
He used a similar one in their shop to order parts.

If it has blue labels, you're probably in the ball park. There is also a serial number stamped on the block - probably starboard side, pretty easy to see.

Anyway, the telltale stream should be nice and strong at all rpm's. On my 9.8, similar vintage, the rubber tube that runs from the engine to the telltale outlet at the bottom of the cowling can get dislodged or out of alignment. The outlet can get clogged up too. While it's running in the barrel, with the cover off, disconnect that tube and see if the water streams strongly out of it.
