I bought a used boat that is a 1989 Bayliner Capri 16' (1500 lbs)

Currently I have a 14X17 prop. (when I look up the part# 0176214 I get this - AL PROP 13.25 X 17)

I have a 1979 evinrude 85999r motor that I am having to rebuild, re-seal and so-on so forth. The prop is really chewed up on the edges like the previous owner would use it in the Mississippi and plow through the rocky bottoms for fun. I would like to go to SST prop instead of AL. According to the Evinrude service manual the OEM options were:

12-3/4 x 21
12-3/4 x 23
13-1/2 x 23

There were Viper options listed in the service manual.

VIPER V4 13.875 X 15
VIPER V4 13.875 X 17
VIPER V4 13.875 X 19

I use this as a family fishing boat on lakes and pulling a tube or ski behind on occasion. I do not have an rpm gauge, but the non-GPS speedo says that it is going about 30mph. (I had to rewire and clean the speed-o just to get it to work)

So I am confused if I should be going with 13.25 X 17 or 13.25 X 21. Also the brands and or models of the props very and so I was thinking the Stiletto series. I would be greatfull for any input you have to offer.

Aluminum ones are more forgiving and cheaper
Ss will look nice and will take little abuse costs alot more to repair
My ss prop costs more to repair than new Aluminum

So you suggest staying with AL and not spending the extra money on SST. I was under the impression that it is not recommended to repair any of the props, even if it was perfectly repaired that it can be perfectly improper. So purchasing a new prop is likely to happen anyway. Sure the AL are cheaper, but if I only have to purchase a prop every 5-10 years, I am ok with that.

ok, the question still remains of 17 or 21 pitch? or should I just get a 19 and try to be happy in the middle?

My info indicates 15 ft or a 17 ft.A 15 is 975 a 17 is 1475.
Unfortunately we are working blind. No rpm and suspect speed.
Some cells have a gps app. at least it should give an accurate speed.
Without speed and rpm there is no way to evaluate the rig.
Don't know if it has issues or if its perfect. When we replace the prop there is no way to know if the wot rpm is right.
If too low rpm over time can cause premature repair problems if too high could cause engine failure.
If it is a 17 ft I do feel a 17" is too much prop. I would suggest a 15" Solas Amita or Rubex prop.
If the 15 turns out too light ( how would we tell?) you could use it by reducing the throttle.

The funny part is when we bought it from the previous owner they told us it was a 16', and on the title it states that it is a 16'. So I went out and measured the boat just now (because I couldn't find anything about a 16' wither) and I found out that it is a 17' boat. The boat's lower unit is currently dismantled and awaiting parts that just shipped today (FROM IBOATS) and when I replace the dog and all the seals along with rebuild the carbs, I will pick up a tachometer this weekend and install it before we go on the lake with the cars GPS. Hopefully this will provide you with the information you are looking for.

The prop selector recommends a 17 pitch for that boat/motor.
