Old Chrysler 20 horse

I have an older model chysler 20 horse outboard that has done wonderfully until recently. Now every time I try and open her up she refuses. It seems like it is missing a gear or something. It does fine at lower speeds but is having trouble at higher speeds. I know nothing about motors and don't even know where to start trouble shooting. Any suggestions??

What does it do when you try to open it up? Stumble, stay at the same speed, or die? Does the Motor rev up, but you go no faster? The best starting point is a Manual, but I'm sure you know this, so a little more info may help along with some backround on the motor.
