I was given an older model Evin-Fisherman 1974? Model # 6402-C. I bought plugs, new gas tank/line, the plugs in it still had the spray paint on them and when checked were in great shape. Motor started up quickly and ran smoothly, the gear shifter however was frozen up (when i tried to force it it bogged the motor down). I checked the lower unit fluid and was dry. The engine was sitting upright for years, when I tried to add oil via my pump, I placed the upper screw in and backed the pump off and GOT SPLASHED with oil.

Does this mean I need to replace the lower unit or a re-build OR can I place it upside down and try and un freeze with additional oil? Please help I have two teenage boys chompen at the bit to get back into the trot-line biz.

Thanks!! My first post to this forum. :p :p :p

Welcome to iboats. Splashed with lower unit oil huh? Oh, that's never happened to any of us (grin).

You have nothing to lose, remove the screws retaining the lower unit skeg and remove the inner components so that you can clean, scrape, wire brush those parts.... you may get lucky.

Just make notes, and if you have a camera, take pictures before you remove items. All of the 6hp models were good designs but it does sound like your engine might have a bad seal according to your statement.... no lower unit fluid in there.

Proper way to fill lower unit... fill from the bottom until the oil flows out the top oil level hole, at which point stop filling. Replace the top screw to create a air pocket. Remove filler from bottom drain hole and replace the screw/seal.

Applying pressure after replacing the oil level screw might get you sprayed with oil (grin).
