Hi all.... First off... I am new to this site as of about 10 mins ago. Hats off to MANY here whom I have noticed have a wealth of knowledge just from browsing around!!

This is my first post and sorry if its in the wrong place, AND it gets to be long winded... I just want to give as much info as I can right away......Here comes my question(s) with a prelude of parts I have (with pics).....

I have a 1971 (I THINK) 60HP Evinrude 3CYL. with the "Selectric" throttle / shift control

4.jpg

It has this amplifier box on it......

3.jpg

With this type of wireing connections.......

5.jpg

I want to replace the current Amp Box (wires on it are dry rotted to hell and brittle etc) with this one that was given to me for free and appears to be in "brand new" condition.....

1.jpg

It has this wireing connection on it.....

2.jpg

First of all..... Can I even USE this "new" Amplifier box with my engine??.... and if so.....

Notice the different connection types for the wires to the harness??... I am fine with just cutting off the plug connectors and replacing them with new eye hooks for my engine setup... but the color of the wires is different (new box VS old box)...

Can someone tell me what color wires on the "new" box go to which number terminal on the "strip" connection my engine has on it right above the mounting spot for the amp box??

In my mind (correct procedure or not..*LOL*) the strip of electrical connections above the amp box mounting position I have numbered in my head while looking straight at it (as in the pic) from right to left as terminal ...1,2,3,4, etc... and top or bottom.

Thank you in advance for any help! Money is very tight for me right now so I am avoiding any cash spending of any kind that can be avoided and the nearest to me marine mechanic / parts store is a 2 hr drive ONE way from me...*LOL*....

Also, please feel free to correct any "incorrect" terminology / grammar / name of parts I have used. I am new to boats, but have a wealth of experience with automotive and motorcycle repairs. I also have lots of "common sense" with mechanical work in general so whomever may reply to help me out here.... You will NOT be dealing with a "moron" that dont know a gas cap from a hubcap...*LOL*

Re: Old Evinrude help PLEASE!!!

It should work. It looks like the wires are correct....maybe. Can't see what they are, all bunched up. Anyway, the original wires were purple = 12V feed, Black = ground, Blue = to coil, black & white stripped = to points (under flywheel), grey = tachometer (tachs are obsolete)

Thank you so much!! Yes... those are the color of wires on the "new" amp box. The "old" (Motorola) one had totally different color wires comming off it. I cant remember for sure now, but there was a tan one, a very, very light blue, etc...anyways...

Your reply leads me to 2 more questions if you dont mind.....

1. you say purple = 12V feed.. Can I connect it to ANY 12V feed?? if so, constant or switched feed?? or does it have to go to a specific terminal on that strip of screw in connections?

2... Grey= Tach.... I was thinking of adding a tach to this boat.... would I just run that grey wire to the tach if I should choose to install one??

Sorry... I guess thats actually more than 2 questions..*LOL*...

Thank you again for the help!! TREMENDOUSLY appreciated!

Re: Old Evinrude help PLEASE!!!

1. The purple wire comes from the ignition switch. It is the wire that turns the amplifier (and motor) on and off. It doesn't matter which physical screw it goes under---what does matter is that the colors match.

2. The old CD tachometers are long ago obsolete. But that doesn't mean you can't have a tach. Virtually all modern day tachs get their signal from the alternator. It counts the pulses coming from the alternator, which are in direct proportion to the RPM. Simply connect it to one of the yellow wires leading to the rectifier.

3. You didn't ask, but it is of utmost importance that the battery terminals and cables are clean and tight. I mean take them off and clean them shiny bright. And NEVER disconnect the battery while it is running!!! Poor connections there are the chief reason for amplifier failure.

Re: Old Evinrude help PLEASE!!!

if ordering parts just note the third 0 in the model number indicates it is a 1970 model. i think you may find some parts are not compatible with a 1971 model.

Dam!! I could almost kiss you..lol... That was gonna be my next step... Deciphering the serial number to find out for sure if it was a 70 or 71! You just saved me a bunch of time researching that!.. Thanks again!
