Old Evinrude question

I was going through my shed and had a look at an old Evinrude that came with my boat and motor as a parts motor. It is a 1956 30 hp (Big Twin I think) #25924-12326 I always assumed I could use the lower unit if I ever needed one, but now I'm not so sure. I read that my 1958 Johnson 35 hp RDSL-20 has a beefed up lower unit. Is that true? If so then I might just have to consider tearing the parts motor down completely for a rebuild/restoration :p

I'm also wondering if there is a difference between a 1957 35 hp Big Twin hood, and the 1956 30 hp Big Twin hood, other than paint?
Thanks

Re: Old Evinrude question

Other than color, the hoods would be the same. The lower unit's should also interchange as long as your 58 is a standard model. In 58 Evinrude made a deluxe model called the lark, and the I believe Johnson made the Javelin. The gearcase on these models are different, as the water pump, and cooling was different.

Re: Old Evinrude question

Thanks ... My 1958 Johnson is a Super SeaHorse 35 hp RDSL-20. This is the model that was painted white with gold trim and had metal mouldings on it, as opposed to gold with white trim, or red and white. I thought the standard model was an RD-19C? I'm not sure where I read that mine had the heavier lower unit. I do know that the RDSL-20 was Johnson's heaviest and most expensive 35 horse that year.

I suppose finding the answer for certain is simple enough by pulling the lower unit on the Evinrude. I just had the Johnson apart and I still have the old water pump housing. On the outside, the lower units look the same though.
