I have a motor lying in the garage in a couple peices... I am looking for any information, any how-to's, or any common mistakes/issues with the motor, and any plain old know-how about this old beasty...

It is an old Evinrude 40hp "big Twin." I dont have a year or serial number, but I do hav ea couple pix of the cover, and I can get more of the engine when I get out to the garage...

The motor is off the boat in the attached pix!

Thanks!

First of all, please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the forum so that you can post your questions in the correct place and make the moderators job just a bit easier.

I will move this to the correct place.

Looks like early 60's - look on the starboard side of engine for a freeze plug about the size of a nickel - should have the model number on it. Report back with the number.

If it's an electric shift lower end, then that is the weak point of the motor. The original motor controls need to be there for it to work correctly.
The lower unit on these uses "Type C" lubricant for electric shift gearcases.
Here's the order I'd do things:
Drain and check lower unit oil for water, metal particles, etc. Refill w/ type C and make sure the controls can shift the motor. An Electra-matic can shift without the motor running, and it's in neutral by default.
Check the compression
Check for spark on both cylinders using a spark tester
Here's some more info:

thanks...

as far as the controls and such, what do I look for? The case is still sealed and it is one unit, with the plugs out, starter assembly removed, and the carb off... The carb is clean and in one peice, and the starter was replaced, but not re-installed...

I will get back to you asap with that number, just gotta get through all the junk to get to it! i am thinking of starting this little boat project for the spare time... it is a neat old cobia fiberglass runabout, maybe 14 or 15 feet...havent measured it... it needs a bunch of stuff like seats, carpet, and a really good clean-up, but this motor is supposedly the original, so I want to keep it as original as possible...

What fuel tank would you use for this type of motor? just a plain old marine tank with a bulb? I never had a boat like this before... I had a rinker 175, and a invader 17, both powered my mercs, inboard and outboard, but the OB had an internal tank...

I like this little boat because it looks like a fun little go boat for the lake, and with a 40 on it, it must be quick! but we will see!

thanks very much for the quick replies, and thanx mods for point out my error, wont happen again...

I have a service manual that may cover your motor but until you post the Model Number, we will not know for sure. If so, I'll send you a free copy. Good luck with your project!
