Hi guys! I have a quick question about my 3hp 1956 Gale. The info plate on the motor says to run 16:1 30W motor oil. I have been running 24:1 TC-W3, the Penzoil blend, with fair results. The motor runs good and does not overheat, but it smokes excessively and it leaves a pretty bad sheen on the water. Maybe it's just the nature of this beast. I was wanting to try a leaner mixture. I've been looking at the Amsoil Saber 100:1 oil. Could I run this oil at a 50:1 ratio or maybe a little richer? Or, do you think I could run the Penzoil a little leaner still? I'm afraid to go too lean with the stuff since it originally ran on 16:1. That's why I'm interested in the Saber stuff.

Please, I don't want to start a war with this question. I'd just like to know if it can be done or has anyone tried it? I know the Saber oil is made for outboards that normally run 50:1. So how do you use it for richer running outboards if you can at all?

Thanks for your help, sorry to rehash this. :D

Re: Old Gale Oil

24:1 with TCW-3 is fine; decarb it if you suspect 30W has been used since the last decarb.

That engine employs babitt bearings rather than needle bearings and uses oil slingers rather than oil seals. The engine will not seal properly at 50:1, causing it to run lean. The babbitt bearings need a thick layer of oil to operate, otherwise they will wear (and wear out quickly).

Some have experienced less smoking by using synthetic oil mixed at 24:1. If your concerns are environmental use an environmentally friendly, easily biodegradable oil mixed at 24:1.

Hey, thanks for that insight, Paul. That makes my decision pretty simple I guess. :)

What exactly is biodegradeable oil? It sounds like a paradox. I've never heard of it. What are some namebrands and who sells it? Interesting concept.

Thanks again! :D

Well, all oils are biodegradable to an extent, it's high concentrations, and how long it takes to degrade, that is the problem. :)
I was thinking of Evinrude Biodegradable Oil, available from dealers, but I'm sure there's others. I think Shell has one.

Paul has given you good advice and he is right about the way the old engines need the excess oil. I wouldnt run the Amsoil 100:1 at 50:1, Its just not designed to be run that way. You might reduce the smoking by using another full synthetic at 24:1, but it is still going to smoke. I thinkas long as you use this engine you are going to be found on the lake pretty easily regardless of which oil you use.

Thanks Paul and LubeDude. I guess I'll just "Get over it". At least if I ever get lost I can follow the sheen back to the dock. :D

Thanks.

Re: Old Gale Oil

the original oil that the sticker refers to would be non detergent 30W it is most usually available at napa and most farm stores it may smoke less than the colored 2 stroke oils and would protect the bearing s best .

Please read our rules and refrain from replying to 7 year old, dead threads, johnboat. Especially don't give bad information. TC-W3 is the correct oil to use.
