I was recently given a 1974 21 Ft Cobalt that has been stored about 5 yrs with appr 30 gallons of gas. Shortly before storage thesterndrive was serviced along with many other parts and was running fine prior to storage. I checked the tank through the float hole and it didnt seem gummed up(varnished) and smelled like gas, however I siphened some out and it is very tea colored. Engine wont quite fire, and at the most sputters and pops once in a while trying to turn it over. What can I do with 30 gallons of 5 yr old gas(seriously)?

I was lucky enough to have been in a car accident and it took shop amost 2 months to repair my car sooo I just put it in my rental car and got rid of it that way.

Check with your local dump and see if they will take it (for a fee).

-JustMrWill

It would take forever to use in a lawnmower as I dont have anywhere to actually store the gas, 30 gallons is quite a bit, and I dont know about keeping that much gas in containers in the garage, currently it is still in the boat.

Check at your public works dept in the city you live in. They should have some sort of hazardous waste drop off station you can go to. The other people to contact would be the local garbage company or the local dump site.

You could add some octane boost and dry gas to it and it should be fine. I have done this to several old boat projects it will just run sweeter the second tank of gas. It will be used up in no time, way less work too. If it runs hot you didn't put enough octane boost in. It will run lean with low octane. Thirty gallons of gas will hold its own pretty well for a long time.

Thanks, I dont think my problem is the gas, as I am running clean fuel through the engine and having the same issues. However after much troubleshooting, everything points to the timing being excatly 180 degrees off, I turned the engine over with the starter without the distributor and I think I put it back in excatly 180 degrees off, which is easy to do, and the engine is sparking during the exaust stroke which isnt going to do anyone any favors, I will switch it around when I get home and see if that is it.
