Y150txra 2002 w/ 79 hours

I have recently purchased the boat/motor in which the boat may have been sitting for some time (9 months). The previous owner did not put a fuel stabilizer in the tank prior to not using it. He did say he tried to start the boat every month and run it for awhile. Please advise of an additive for the fuel if indeed the fuel may not be as high an octane. Measures taken by myself have been: new fuel filter, adding an additional 10 gallons of 93 octane to the existing 60 gallons (90 gallon tank) & new spark plugs. I plan on changing the gear oil when I have the carburetor cleaned. Any additional incite would much be appreciated. Rodbolt, might your services be available?

they may be. my advice on the fuel is to pump it. its cheap. i dont see a y desigignation.
post a complete model number. remember on the efi and carbed engines everything that goes down the intake track has to lubricate it. the pistons skirts will build up the solids and varnishes from poor fuel and can cause problems.
toss the fuel and try again.

with no other model prefix numbers it should be a standard carbed 150. a very good engine if maintained. proper maint is critical. needs waterpumps,t-stats fuel pumps and pressure grommets on a regular basis. several places, joes marine in wanchese or B&T outboard in moyock. both have some competent techs.
but if fuel quality is suspect its always better to toss it than attempt to run it. it may run fine in an auto but auto's dont rely on the incoming fuel for lubrication nor are they sensitive to piston skirt deposits.

I wouldn't worry too much about 9mo old gas. Smell it. If it smells bad, worry. If it smells like gas, don't. If you were in a hot climate I'd be a bit more concerned.

I totally agree with rodbolt on this one... recently had a '99 Yamaha 150 carb motor in for bogging and generally running bad, built the carbs at the owners insistance (advised him to try new mid-grade or better fuel first, but he declined), and ended up taking the owner to the water with a 6 gallon can of fuel. After plugging on my fuel line and allowing a few minutes for the fresh fuel to reach the motor, it perked right up.

Some Yamaha owners manuals suggest 90 octane or better, and all warn against old fuel. 9 months is WAY too old for any fuel I'll ever run in an outboard motor!

Re: old gas - yamaha 150txra 2002

I am not so concered with octane los as the varnish the old fuel leaves. I am not a petrochemical anganeer so I cant explain why but it leaves a sticky residue on and in the rings and grooves and builds up on the piston skirts like black laquer until the piston fails. rebuilt to mny like that.
90 gallons of gas is expensive, 25 hours of labor ,6 pistons and the machine work is very expensive. roll the dice if you must but it keeps my horse in hay.
