My old See bee 5 horse power, 1949 50 model had one of the spark plug wires fall off from whatever it connects to, not the spark plug the other end. What does this connect to? How do I get to it? Should I use carbon filled spark plug wire or copper? How can I prevent this from happening again? Thanks for all the help. I bought a brand new cork float in the package from Buck's Marine in Poplar Bluff Missouri, Great guy has many old parts, reasonable prices, and a whole life time of advise. Lucky find no doubt, was on lake when it went down, old cork float went bad while fishing. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to pull the flywheel because the end of the wire you are talking about connects to one of the coils under the flywheel. You can buy a harmonic damper/balancer puller from an auto parts store for about $20 that will do the job. You have to remove the flywheel, remove the coil that the wire goes to and re-attach the wire you have or replace it with a new wire. Use only solid core wire...not carbon/composite wires used for today's autos. You can get solid core wire (real twisted wire) at most mower or small engine shops. Might want to get enough to replace both wires. Clean and regap the points while you have the flywheel off. If the coils are cracked (unlikely) they will need to be replaced, too. I bet yours are good cause you have a 49 model, the older coils are almost bullet proof but the ones made/sold from the early to mid 50's and forward are not so...they almost always crack and degenerate with age due to the material used to encase the coil. Good luck.

If you have the "bulletproof" coils, the wire is soldered to it. The wires are also supposed to be clamped up underneath the armature plate. You MAY have one that doesn't require a flywheel puller. On those, the flywheel nut in combination with the rope sheave acts as a puller.

Just out of curiosity what is the reason for using stranded wire, not that I am doubting anyone I was just wondering why.

The car stuff with carbon core has resistance. Those old magnetos don't have the power to handle the resistance.
