I have a 20 year old honda es6500 generator.

It will not start, no power to anything, no lights, no click at starter solinoid.

This is the second time I have had this problem. Tried to get it going last year, had a charger hooked up to it, tried to start it with the charger on and it toasted something.

I had this same thing about 10 years ago but I can't remember how it was fixed, I just remember it was about $300 at the Honda shop.:( Seems to me it may have been a relay.

Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. Any help is welcome. And no I don't have a manual but I will be looking for one.

Re: Old Honda Generator help

So after three months I started testing the different components to try and find my problem.

The manual states to test the continuity of the switch to test between the terminals as listed.

Off position - "red to green/white and black to black yellow" - this I tested and have continuity, it's good

On position - states "white to light green to black/white"

I can test W to LG and have continuity with the switch on, none with the switch off.

There is no continuity between LG to B/W with the switch on or off. I think this is my problem connection

Have I tested this right way or am I supposed to jumper this together some how to test.

Start position - states "white to light green to yellow to black white"
When I test W to LG, LG to Y, Y to BW with the switch on I have continuity.

I think I tested this right and it checks out good.

Have I done this correctly and come to the right conclusion?

To confirm this you could run a jumper wire, just enough gas to run for a short run. Might have a feed back circuit to black/white from light green. I take this is electric start so may be a bad solenoid. My gen is a generac pull start always starts by third pull.

Re: Old Honda Generator help

The tests performed are on the switch which has been disconnected from the generator.

I bought a new battery and new fuses. Hooked it up and it blew the fuse.

Yes it is electric start, I can jump the starter and the solinoid and they work.

Re: Old Honda Generator help

Any time I start blowing fuses its a dead short somewhere????
I would start by disconnecting the battery, board (if it has one), the starter, ignition ETC.
Replace the fuse and slowly connect up each thing you disconnected till the fuse pops.
