Hello I just purchased a 16 foot alum. fishing boat. I took it out last week and it ran fine all day. But seemed alittle slow (rpm,s not high enough) Before I went out ran it in a barrel for 20 minutes it sounded great. Im using 50 to 1 oil mixture and new gas. So I was going to take the carb apart and clean it. I have read alot of posts here and im confused about pressure tanks. The tank that came with the boat was a old metal johnson tank. I didnt know old the gas was so I bought a new plastic tank at walmart and used it. I have read on the forums some of these 18 hp have a fuel pumps and some dont. Could that have anything to do with the low rpm's. It ran about 5-8 mph and the engine sounded like it was running only 1500 rpm,s. The boat weighs about 150 pounds and had 400 pounds of people in it. I also took the boat up to the mountains to use it 7500 ft so I thought that might be the only problem. I mostly want to use it at 5000 ft altitude where I live. The engine is a Johnson 18 hp s/n- J2508836 and the model is FD19D does anyone know the year and stuff on this motor? Any help would be great. This is my first post here looks like a great forum Thanks everyone. Tony

Looks like a 1965 18HP to me. It would not have a pressure tank, those stopped in the late 50's. Could be a bad fuel pump, but I would check compression first. A bad head gasket can cause low power under load, where it runs good in a barrel but dose not pushing a boat. Look here http://www.old-omc.de/index2.html for info. Rick

fd 19 is a 1965. It will have a fuel pump. Sounds like your's is only running on one cylinder. They will run great in a tank, but not on the boat. Pull the recoil and look in the flywheel inspection plate and you will probably find cracked coils. If they coils are good I would dress the points. Check to see if it has good hot spark on both cylinders.
