Hey, If one was to take the necessary steps to make a 1965 johnson 40hp charge the battery, what would these steps be? It has no circuit or anything for the matter, did they make add-ons for this or does anyone have any ideas how to hook something up? (I run a lot of electronic gadgets) :) Thanks for any ideas!
Craig

Hey Craig, how we doin' tonight?

The older motors were equipped with DC generators that were belt driven. The regulators were in the box that houses the starter solenoid. The old regulators would remind you of an old car type regulator, the black box type. You would have to find one with mounting bracket if your present motor is not equipped with one plus a belt and regulator. Wireing may or may not be already present on the motor. Really, unless you just want to restore the thing, it's not really worth the hassle. Just keep the battery charged up.

Re: old johnson 40hp-wanna make it charge

another question while Im at it... People are always talking about water in the lower end. On every outboard I have owned the lube never stays clear, it always gets a little milky, I have had a severe leak before and it was much more milky then what I speak of now. But it always winds up being about the color of the light grey background on this site. Is this normal or have all my motors been leaking? and if so is it a serious problem at all? Theyve never let me down..
Thanks
Craig

Thanks OBJ...Im doing great tonight, yourself? I had thought I heard of such a thing before, thanks for proving its existance. I am restoring the boat, thats why Im sticking with the '65. But trust me she will get her miles no matter whats on it! The belt would be similar to a timing belt? Cogged I mean, and rides on the top part of the flywheel thats, ohhh, maby 4 or 5 inch diameter? I will have to ask around for one of these jobbys... True it is not that necessary, But I like to have my radio going, and other radio, two depth sounders, and now I have an inverter, TV/VCR for my homemade UW camera :D after a long ride, nice dive and long ride back it starts a little slowly...
Craig

WOW!! With all that stuff, just carry a generator on board! LOL!! You are right about the belt drive. The generators belt fit on that place on top of the flywheel just like you guestimated. As far as the lower unit oil going grey, it will do this. Means it's time to replace it. If you use your rig as much as I use mine, I check mine about once a month anyhow. I like to be safe. If in doubt, get a pressure and vacuum check made on the lower unit. This will tell you if everything is OK down there. By the by, is your old girl manual or electric shift?

Hello Craig.
Been there,done that.
Twin city outboards at 612-496-1951 has everything you need.(including bracket and if needed a flywheel with sprocket on top)
Seloc Johnson/Evinrude outboard volume one (1956-1970)has a very clear description of the parts, their maintenance and their repair.
It also has the wiring diagrams.
It does not give you a great power producer. In order to produce any power at all you must run the engine above 1500 rpm.It will not produce anything over 10 amps.
If you try to restore an engine and this setup is part of it,then by all means.Otherwise, you can buy yourself a few very good deep cycle batteries and a great charger for less money.
Remember, you do not need any electricity for this engine to run.
For your other question, there is a thread on this board called "lower units 101".It answers all your lower unit questions.

There have been previous threads on this topic.

Most of us don't use the old generators - not worth the expense (belts are $50).

Just charge your starting battery with a small charger from Sears and keep a second battery on board if you really think you need it.

Re: old johnson 40hp-wanna make it charge

Thanks again! OBJ she is a manuel shifter and I thank god every day for that! I have a 55 horse with that good-for-nuthing electric shift. I have been thru 3 lower ends Cuz I kept losing revers and neutral, even when it did work right it didnt work well. at a real slow idle in reverse it would pop in and out and all that  Rupe Goldberg...electric over magnetic over mechanical over hydrualic, heck it used every form of energy known to man! the whole thing was a bad idea as far as I am concerned. What kind of price tag would be on that generator? I know I can get away with batteries and charging but I just like the idea of having a generator :) But on the other hand, many people have been quite shocked at the things I go thru to save myself a buck!! Oh and the lower lube, I thought that it would just turn like that normally, but on the other hand it did it after the first 3 mile run... eh I think its fine...
Craig
PS heres a picture of her http://www.geocities.com/cpasseno/New_Powerhead.jpg and theres a bunch more on that site if your interested. I sure think its a sleek ol boat :)

Re: old johnson 40hp-wanna make it charge

These are the numbers, give or take a few dollars.
Generator used $80
regulator used $50 sometimes as high as $85
belt new $50
20 amp amperage meter for your dash board $20
Marine grade wiring $25
Generator bracket used $20
Large type solenoid starter box used $20
Add to that the usual 15% scr-w up expenses and you've got it.

Re: old johnson 40hp-wanna make it charge

Yikes... That puts a damper on that Idea. Ill talk to the folks at the local OMC shop Its been there almost as long as OMC itself ;) I know the family that does it and they usually can dig around and hook me up with 90 year old odd ball things that I so often need. If I cant Rig something up with his help then its no big deal. I know its not a necessary thing but I thought it would be cool. Thanks again!!!!! Man this whole internet never ceases to amaze me. such a wealth of knowedge out there!
Craig

Re: old johnson 40hp-wanna make it charge

I bought the complete setup for my 1958 Johnson 35 for only $75. Also know someone who may have a setup if you are interested I can e-mail him and see how much he wants. I know it will be cheaper than any parts places.
