I've got a decent running Johnson Sea Horse Model TN-??, 5.0 O.B.C..
Anyway the engine runs after getting the Rich/Lean and choke in the right positions.
The problem is when I engage the forward only gear lever. Drags engine down and it sputters then dies.
I inherited the motor and cleaned it up, it sat for years. Emptied the foot grease, and refilled with Premium Johnson grease. In a make shift tank it ran fine and the forward gear produced some turbulence. But out on the lake,, well rowing wasn't as romantic as I remember.

Of the foot gears and bearings, clutch dog which is probably the suspect?
The prop turns, but engaged the tranny puts a huge drag on the engine?
Thanks mates

Re: Old Johnson foot problem

Hi Steve,
Was there any evidence of water in the old grease? Those neutral clutch motors usually work pretty well, but if someone previously has tried to service the water pump or something, they may have misadjusted the cable that actuates the spring clutch. There is no clutch dog as in a later mechanical style gear shift. Rather it is a spring wrapped around a shaft. When the spring is loose on the shaft, the motor is in neutral. When it is tight on the shaft, it is in drive....
Might want to search around eBay for a vintage manual, or post some queries on the AOMCI.org site's Ask A Member board...
- Scott
