Call me crazy, but I got a good deal on a 1955 Johnson, QD16, 10hp Seahorse. I'm trying to get it running for my little flatbottom.

I'm working thru some carbuerator issues right now, but I've realized that I don't know where to set the throttle when trying to start the motor.

Throttle is on the tiller handle, but there are no markings anywhere. Probably came off years ago. Can anyone tell me the proper throttle position for starting this thing? Left, Right, Middle? Thanks.

Start about halfway. Try that. If it takes several pulls, go a little farther. When you find the combination, mark the twistgrip and the tiller handle to help you from then on.

The one thing I've found is that each engine has its own sweet spot throttle setting for cold starts. Warm starts are easy.

Your QD16 should start cold in two pulls...three max. You'll find the right spot.

My QD19 ('58) starts first pull every time cold. But of course the start mark is on it. You can buy then marked rings for the twist grip remanufactured... But eventually you will find and it just mark it as mentioned.

The markings are notoriously inaccurate. No matter what the markings say, or don't say, the proper start position is put the shift in neutral, then advance the throttle as far as it goes. It will only go to the proper start position. This assumes, of course that the shifter interlock isn't worn out. If it is, fix it.

Also check your coils for cracks. If they are original they will need to be replaced.

WBEATON, your timing is dead on.

Took the pull starter off tonight and found that both coils are cracked. Guess I'm gonna need a couple more parts.

Wonder where this will end?

If you replace those coils and the points, it will end with a nice running 10 hp outboard that should outlive you if it's maintained properly.

Don't give up yet.

Yes, don't give up. It will be a great motor. The QD's are excellent.

You can't set the carb until after you've replaced those coils.

Thanks for all the info and encouragement.

Went down to my local Johnson dealer today. Picked up a carb kit, new water pump impeller, and plugs. Had to order the coil and points. That was a quick $140. But should be well worth it.

Can't wait to hear this baby run.
