Hello
I have a 1969 Johnson 85hp that I bought last winter. I have been using it all spring with good luck, the thing runs like a top, starts a little hard but after it's warmed up, it runs great.
Yesterday I was out fishing, the boat was running great all day but all of a sudden it wouldn't start after sitting for about 30 minutes. Prior to the no start condition, I had run a couple miles on plane from one fishing spot to another, didn't catch anything so I decided to do some testing. I wanted to make sure the bilge was working properly so put 25-30 gallons of water in the boat and ran the bilge to empy that out (about 5-7 minutes steady). The bilge is wired to the starting battery and my trolling motor batteries are seperate, an issue I might be changing soon. After running the battery a little low, I tried to start the boat to go to the landing but it just cranked and cranked, didn't even pop. I used the trolling motor to get to the landing and went home to see if I could figure out what was wrong.
After arriving home, I charged the starting battery fully to make sure that wasn't the issue. I put muffs on the motor and tried to start it but it still just keeps turning over and wont pop. I sprayed a little ether in the intake and it fired and ran on the ether but would just die as soon as the ether was burnt up. I then checked that there was fuel and found that there was indeed when I disconnected the fuel line from the outboard and squeezed the primer bulb. I then verified that there was fuel at the tee after the fuel filter and there was, same thing when squeezing the primer bulb.
It was getting dark so I left it for today. I'll be working on it again today but if anybody has any tips, they'd be greatly appreciated. It seems there is fuel at the carbs but it won't even come close to starting. There is spark and the timing is right since it'll run on ether so I'm not sure where to go now. Thanks in advance for any assistance you guys can provide.
